Tannerie or Megisserie : what are the differences?

The “tannerie” is specialised in the treatment of large hides, such as those from calves, cows, bullocks and buffalo. The trade takes its name from the word tan, a substance derived from ground oak bark, which was once used in the tanning process. The tanning process consists of transforming the raw hide into durable, supple leather using tannins. Today, tanning has evolved to include various methods: vegetable tanning, using plant extracts, and mineral tanning, based on salts such as chromium.

The “megisserie” focuses on small skins, such as those of lambs, sheep and goats. This trade has its roots in the word megis, a mixture of water, ash and alum used to prepare the hides. The megisserie aims to produce finer, more delicate leathers, often used for luxury items or soft, lightweight leather garments.
